The Challenge Years

(Season 29) The Challenge : Invasion of the Champions

The game started off with 18 Underdogs (players who have yet to win a challenge) who get dropped off a boat and onto a beach, where they were living in "The Shelter." They compete individually in challenges, followed by an elimination round. The male and female winners of the challenge would be safe from elimination, and earn their ticket to "The Oasis" — the season house. The last-place finishers of each gender automatically went straight into elimination for the first challenge.  In the second challenge, the challenge winners will choose a player of the opposite gender to go into the elimination. The remainder of the cast then voted in who goes against them for the first and second challenge. The males voted for the females, and vice versa.  In the third challenge, and the last chance to earn a ticket to the Oasis, the winners will be safe from elimination, and the two remaining players of each gender will automatically compete against each other. In the elimination, each gender will compete. The winners of the elimination round would return to the game, and earn a ticket to The Oasis. The losers of the elimination round go home. Players could not go into The Oasis until every ticket had been earned.  Players who earned their ticket to the Oasis will be exempt from elimination and will not compete in challenges until the Champions enter the gnome.  In Episode 5, eight of the toughest champions (four male, four female) will enter the game, which will become a team competition - Underdogs vs. Champions. Each challenge will be designated as either an Underdog or a Champion elimination known as "The Fortress". The winning team will earn money in their team bank account depending on the challenge.  The best performing male and female of the team designated for the challenge will then choose one player of each gender to go into the elimination. The remainder of the cast will then vote in the players who will go against the nominated players in The Fortress. The winners return to the game, and the losers are eliminated.

Players stay at the shelter for the duration of the final challenge
Stage One - Pairs must swim from a sand barge to an island and solve a triangle puzzle in order to retrieve a key. They must then use a paddleboard to swim back to the barge to unlock another puzzle. Once the puzzle on the barge has been solved, the pair's times will be stopped

Upon reaching the buoy players must swim as fast as they can to the finish line where their individual times are stopped. Players that fall off the bar before reaching the buoy must swim the distance. Once on shore, T.J. announces the final results

(Season 30) The Challenge XXX : Dirty 30

The cast is composed of contestants who have acted dirty on a past season or show. The main elements of the game are as follows -
Daily Missions: Each round, the players compete in a challenge. The challenges will vary between individual and team challenges. The winners are immune from elimination and nominate one player of each gender for the Elimination Round. The losers players are eligible for the Double Cross. In some challenges, not everyone is eligible for the Double Cross but is still vulnerable to be nominated by the winning team
Nominations: The winners from the Main Match openly vote to nominate one other player of each gender for the Elimination Round
Elimination Rounds (Presidio): At the "Presidio", the "Double Cross" Draw is held. All losing players from the Daily Mission participate in a Random-Draw. The player who draws the Double Cross is safe from elimination and must nominate a fellow losing player of their Gender into the Presidio. The winners remain in the game, while the losers are eliminated.

In the end, only six players - 3 male and 3 female - compete in the final challenge. Unbeknownst to each contestant, they will compete for a share of $1,000,000 — the largest monetary prize in Challenge history.  The winner of each gender winning $450,000, the runners-up winning $35,000 and third place taking home $15,000.

Twists
Purge Challenges: Some challenges are designated as Purges - sudden death challenges where the losers are immediately eliminated. In the opening challenge "The Purge", the players competed in several rounds to guarantee their safety, with 3 players of each gender being eliminated. The "X Marks the Spot" and "Snaking Your Way Back In" challenges composed the second purge of the game. This purge would narrow down the 10 players, to the final 6 that would face the Final Challenge
Vote-Offs: At some points in the game, the winners of the Daily Mission also win the power to vote-off one of the losers. In "The Purge", the winners of the final part of the challenge has to vote-off 3 out of the 4 remaining losing players of their gender. In "Blackout", the winning team has to vote one male and one female out of the game. In "Backstabber", the individual winners vote one male and one female out of the game
Redemption House: Similar to Ex-ile from Battle of the Exes II, the "Redemption House" gives eliminated players a chance to re-enter the game. Periodically, the players in Redemption House participate in a Redemption Game, with the winners returning to the game, while the losers are officially eliminated.

Stage Five - The winner from the last stage will now separate and choose two new partners. Each pair must run into a smokey structure and feel around until they can discover the word on the wall. If they are incorrect they must run back inside before trying again
Dirty Deed #2 - The winners from Stage 5 will assign one player of the same gender to sleep on the ground all night while the other finalists will enjoy a comfortable bed
Stage 6 - Players must each put on safety gear and hold onto a sled that is being pulled by a truck for as long as they can and then run to the finish line. If they drop prematurely, they must run the remaining distance. T.J. would later reveal that he would not be announcing the winners until the reunion

(Season 31) The Challenge : Vendettas

28 players – each with unresolved grudges with other contestants – compete to survive in the game and win their share of $500,000. Each round is designated as a male, female or genderless round. The main elements of the game are as follows -
Daily Missions: Each round, the players compete in a challenge. The challenges vary between individual and team challenges. The winners split $25,000 for their individual bank accounts. In an individual challenge, the three best performers in the challenge form the Troika, while the worst-performer of the designated gender is nominated for elimination. In team challenges, the winning team elects the Troika among themselves, while the losing team must vote immediately and publicly for a teammate of the designated gender to face elimination.
Troika & Inquisition: The three players in the Troika are immune from entering the Elimination Round. They nominate three players of the designated gender for the Elimination Round. The nominees face the "Inquisition", where they have the chance to plead their case to the Troika as to why they should not be voted-in to the Elimination Round.
Elimination Rounds (The Ring): In "The Ring", the Troika votes for one of the players who faced the Inquisition to compete in the Elimination Round. The winners stay in the game, and earn a "Grenade". Grenades hold power that can be used on any other player by the elimination winner. The losers of the elimination round go home, and their individual bank accounts total is added to the final prize fund.

When eight players remain, they compete individually in the Final Challenge for their share of the $500,000 prize. Only the Top 4 players win the money in their bank account. Additionally, first place is awarded the money from the bank accounts of every eliminated player as well as an additional $150,000. Second place receives an additional $35,000, third place an additional $10,000 and the fourth place an additional $5,000. The other four finalists receive nothing.

Twists
Purges: Some challenges are designated as Purges, where the worst competitors are immediately eliminated. In the opening "Get Off the Rock" challenge, the worst-performing male and female are eliminated. In the "Help Me, Rhonda" challenge, the worst-performing male and female are eliminated. Due to uneven ratio of Males to Females, the "Outside the Box" challenge is also a Male Purge, with the worst-finishing male being eliminated.
Mercenaries: For some of the Elimination Rounds, the nominated players face the Mercenaries instead of each other. The Mercenaries are experienced veterans, returning to The Challenge for a one-off challenge. Mercenary rounds occur during rounds that feature both a male and female elimination. A player winning against the Mercenary stays in the game, losing against the Mercenary eliminates the player. This means that all four or none of the nominated players could be eliminated depending on the results of each heat. In the "Crazy 8" Elimination Round, the female nominees face either Aneesa Ferreira or Tori Deal. The male nominees face either Derrick Kosinski or Jordan Wiseley. In the "Yankin' My Chain" challenge, the female nominees face either Ashley Mitchell or Laurel Stucky. The male nominees face either Darrell Taylor or Frank Sweeney.

(Season 32) The Challenge : Final Reckoning

Contestants are competing in pairs with someone they have a vendetta against (i.e. a rival or ex), who are unknown to them until they successfully survive the Opening Challenge. The elements of the game are as follows:
Daily Missions: Each round, the pairs compete in a challenge. The winning team is immune from elimination and has the "Power Vote" in the Reckoning Vote.
Reckoning Vote: Following the Daily Mission, teams have to secretly vote one of the losing pairs for the Elimination Round. The "Power Vote" counts as two votes, but may only be cast on one team.
Elimination Rounds (Armageddon): At the "Armageddon", the results of the Reckoning Vote are revealed to the players. In the event of a tied vote, the pair holding the "Power Vote" hold the tie-breaking vote (but should they not be able to reach a decision, then they become the nominated pair). The teams who voted for the nominated team are also revealed, and the nominated team has to call-out a non-immune team who voted for them. The two teams then face each other in the Armageddon. The losing pair is eliminated, while the winners stay in the game.

In the end, the Final Four teams compete in the Final Challenge and compete for $1,000,000, with the winning team taking it all. Unbeknownst to the contestants until the final challenge, the person who accrues a faster time during aspects of the final challenge that are individually timed has a choice between keeping all the money to themselves or sharing it with their partner.

(Season 33) The Challenge : War of the Worlds

This season featured 16 Challenge veterans and 18 prospects - new Challenge competitors from around the world. For the first ten episodes, the players competed in male/female pairs. Each veteran player paired with a prospect of the opposite sex. The Prospect picked their alumni partner based on the finish order of the opening "Impending Dune" challenge. Once in their pairs, the main phase of the game began. The main elements of the game are as follows :
Daily Missions: Each round the pairs will compete in the daily challenge. The top 3 pairs are immune from elimination and form the Tribunal for that round of play
Tribunal: The Tribunal will collectively nominate three pairs to nominate for the elimination round. The nominated pairs then face the Tribunal's interrogation with each nominee having the chance to plea their case as to why they should not be voted-in to the elimination.
Eliminations (The Killing Floor): At "The Killing Floor", the members of the tribunal each individually and publicly vote for a nominated pair to enter the elimination round. The nominated team must then call-out any non-immune pair, challenging them to the elimination. The losing pair is eliminated from the game, while the winner stays in the game and is given "The Relic" - which awards them immunity in the next round of play

During the 10th episode of the season, the 7 remaining pairs were disbanded, with the 14 remaining players playing the rest of the competition as individuals - with players competing in challenges as individuals and eliminated as individuals. The game format remains mostly the same, but with each round of play being designated as a male or female round and only players of the designated gender are at risk of being eliminated, but any player can be part of that round's Tribunal. Additionally, the relic is no longer awarded to an individual elimination winner

When eight players remain, they will compete individually in the Final Challenge for their share of the $1,000,000 prize. First place will receive $750,000. Second place will receive $200,000, and third place will receive $50,000. The other five, receive nothing.

Twists
Purge: Some challenges will be designated as a Purge challenge - sudden death challenges the losers are immediately eliminated. Two Purge challenge were held during the game: In the "Impending Dune" challenge, the worst finishing male and female prospect were eliminated before pairs were drafted. In the "Judgement Day" challenge, the worst finishing male and female were eliminated in the Penultimate Challenge of the game.
Double Elimination: The "Ring Tossed" challenge was a Double Elimination in which three teams competed and four players were eliminated (opposed to the normal two players). The pair called-out by the nominated pair must also call-out a third pair - meaning 3 teams would compete to stay in the game. Then the three players of each gender will compete against each other in the elimination and only the winner of each gendered heat remaining in the game. Should members of two different pairs win their gendered-heat, they will form a new pair and continue in the game, while their original partner is eliminated

Each player's individual times were recorded and added up to determine the winner of the season at the end of the final. During the final, competitors were eliminated until four remaining competitors crossed the finish line where the results were announced
Day One
First Leg: Players begin the final by running and cycling through a six-mile loop four times (24 miles overall). In the middle of the figure-eight loop there are five checkpoints each player must complete. Players can complete checkpoints at any stage during the 24 miles. If the checkpoint they wish to complete is currently occupied, they may wait, or continue with their 24 miles. Each checkpoint has a 20-minute time limit before players time out. Unbeknownst to the players, the Top 3 players of this stage would form the Tribunal for an Instant Elimination
Checkpoints
On Point: Players stand behind a starting line and throw one ring onto each hook pointing out from a board
Pyramid Scheme: Players must complete a 5x5 grid puzzle so that each row and column has one of each color
Rampage: Players push a ball to the top of a ramp and into a basket using a provided pole
Skulled Out: Players must complete a vertical puzzle to form a picture of a skull
So Rolled: Players stand behind a startling line and roll a tire through a hole
Tribunal: Theo, Turbo & Wes - Eliminated: Georgia (8th place — DQ), Mattie (7th place — Quit)
Instant Elimination - Walk Tiny: Players hold on to a 50-foot rope that is connected to a monster truck. The truck slowly drives thus taking the players on a walk. The first person to fall or drop the rope would be eliminated - Winner: Natalie D eliminating Hunter (6th Place)
Day Two
Geography Trivia: Players are asked a series of multiple-choice geography trivia questions. If they answer a question incorrectly, they would be eliminated from the checkpoint. The last player standing would be driven for the first mile of the Second Leg in a dune buggy while the remaining four players must traverse the sand dunes on foot (Winner: Cara Maria)
Second leg: Players had to travel on foot over a series of sand dunes, completing the checkpoints that the players encounter
Battle Ball: Players must wait for the next player to arrive. The two players place colored balls one at a time into a slot attempting to line four balls in a row (similar to Connect Four). The first player to line up four of their colored balls in a row is allowed to continue while the loser must wait for the next player to arrive to play again. The player who loses the final battle will receive a five minute time penalty, which must be served before continuing
Eating: The first player to arrive at the checkpoint may eat as much or as little of the provided food items as they like. Once finished, they must divide up the remaining plates of food among the remaining four players. Once the remaining players reach the checkpoint, they must eat everything they have been assigned before continuing
Final leg: Players run five miles down a beach to reach four kayaks. Along the way, there is a math problem they must solve to unlock a kayak and paddle towards a boat wreck. As there are only four kayaks, the remaining player without a kayak will be eliminated (Eliminated - Cara Maria (5th Place)
From the boat wreck, the remaining four players run down the beach to a lighthouse where the finish line is set up. Once the final four players have reached the finish line, their total times will be added together to determine the winner of War of the Worlds

(Season 34) The Challenge : War of the Worlds 2

For War of the Worlds 2 the players are divided into two teams (Team USA and Team UK) with teams initially based on the participants' respective home country. The main elements of the game are as follows.
Daily Missions: Each round the teams compete in the daily challenge. The winning team gains the power to elect the speaker of the Tribunal among themselves, the speaker then selects two other teammates (one male and one female) to form the Tribunal, while the losing team must participate in Nominations.
Nominations: Following the daily challenge, the players from the losing team must nominate one player of the designated gender to compete in the elimination round. The team is given a chance to discuss the nominations, with players allowed to name potential nominees before voting between them publicly.
Tribunal: Each round a Tribunal consisting of three players from the winning team of the daily challenge is formed. The Tribunal players are the only players completely safe from entering the elimination. No player is allowed to be part of two consecutive Tribunals. The Tribunal witnesses the Nominations and then interrogates the Losing Team's nominee - usually asking potential players the nominee would like to face-off against.
Eliminations (The Proving Ground): At "The Proving Ground", the members of the Tribunal each vote for the second player to enter the Proving Ground - this nominee may come from either team. The two nominees then must face each other in the Proving Ground. The loser is eliminated from the game while the winner stays in the game and is given the opportunity to change allegiance and swap team. However, once a player swaps, they may not swap back

At the end of the game, those who remained competed in their teams in the Final Challenge. A Purge was held during the Final Challenge, leaving only 4 players from each team to compete for the Grand Prize. The winning team equally split the $1,000,000 grand prize ($250,000 for each member)

Twists
The Reinforcements: Four Reinforcements (Chris "CT" Tamburello, Dee Nguyen, Natalie "Ninja" Duran, and Turabi "Turbo" Çamkıran) arrived following the first challenge. The winning team of the first daily challenge will have first picks on one male and one female to join their team, with the remaining players joining the losing team.
Double Elimination: Episode 8 featured a Double Elimination Round in which both a male and a female player were eliminated. The losing team had to nominate a male and female player, and the Tribunal also nominate a male and female player.
Purge: Some challenges will be designated as a Purge challenge - sudden death challenges where the losers are immediately eliminated. The "Puzzling Swim" daily challenge was a Purge challenge. The slowest pairing in the swimming portion of the challenge was instantly eliminated. As the final leg of the Final Challenge only allowed for four members on each team, the players competed in a mid-final purge to narrow each team to four players.
Instant Elimination: Following the "Mine The Cart" challenge, the players participated in instant nominations for an Elimination Round to be held immediately following the challenge

One of these three chosen interrogated competitors will be selected for possible elimination. At the Purgatory, the tribunal is asked to individually vote for the second player to participate in the elimination. (Season 36) The Challenge : Double Agents

Double Agents features a main challenge, a nomination process, and an elimination round. This season had players competing in male-female teams of two, initially selected among themselves at the conclusion of the opening challenge. These teams frequently changed throughout the season due to the nature of the game.
Daily Challenge: Players compete in a main challenge in pairs, where the winning team forms the Double Agents.
Nominations: Following the Daily Challenge, players, besides the Double Agents, participate in deliberations and must vote for one pair to participate in the elimination round. They are given a chance to discuss the nominations before voting by secret ballot and as individuals. The team who receives the most votes are 'compromised' and will have the player of the designated gender compete in the elimination round.
Double Agents: Following nominations, the Double Agents are shown the nominated team, as well as which individuals voted for them. At the Crater, the Double Agents individually vote for a second team to compete against the nominated team in the elimination round, where the player of the designated gender will participate. The Double Agents may also volunteer for elimination instead of voting for a team.
Eliminations (The Crater): Following the Double Agent's votes, the gender that participates in the elimination round is disclosed. The player of the designated gender of the nominated team competes in an elimination round against the same-gender player of the team selected by the Double Agents, or the volunteer from the Double Agents. The loser is eliminated while the winner receives a Gold Skull and remains in the game. Additionally, the winner is given the choice between remaining with their current partner, or selecting any player of the opposite gender to become their new partner excluding the Double Agents

Twists
Gold Skull: Similar to the "Red Skull" from Total Madness, winning an elimination round earns a player a Gold Skull, a requirement to compete in the Final Challenge. Unique to this season, there are only 10 skulls available - five for each gender. Once all five skulls are obtained for a gender, the only way to attain a skull is to defeat a player possessing a skull in elimination.
Rogue Agents: A player without a partner at any point in the game is classified as a Rogue Agent. Rogue Agents do not compete in the next daily challenge and are ineligible to be selected for elimination. Once a player of the opposite gender also becomes a Rogue Agent, the two contestants form a new team and compete as usual.
Infiltration: The winner of an elimination round may select any player of the opposite gender (excluding the Double Agents) to become their partner. In the event that a player in an existing pair is chosen, their former partner either chooses a new partner between the remaining agents without a partner, pairs up with the agent without a partner, or becomes a Rogue Agent, depending on numbers.
Security Breach: Two "Security Breach" twists were enacted throughout the season -
Reactivated Agent: In Episode 5, eliminated contestant Ashley Mitchell returned to the competition due to the number of female medical disqualifications.
Double Elimination: In Episode 11/12, a Double Male Elimination occurred in which two male players were eliminated. The two teams that received the most votes during nominations were compromised. The Double Agents then had to vote two teams into the Crater to compete against the compromised teams, or could volunteer against either compromised team

Ride or Dies features a daily challenge, a selection process and an elimination round. This season had players competing in teams of two with their "Ride or Die", an ally they chose before the season began
Daily Challenge: Teams compete in a daily challenge where the winning team is immune from elimination and selects four teams to interrogate
Eliminations (The Zone): The daily challenge winners must select one of the teams they interrogated to compete in the elimination round. The three unselected interrogated teams then participate in the "Draw" to determine the second team for the elimination round. The winners remain in the game while the losers are eliminated

In episode 9, the format changed and no elimination was held after the "Haul or Nothing" challenge. Instead, the winners were appointed as team captains and split each "Ride or Die" pair to form two teams of eight. The format of the game from episodes 10 to 14 is as follows
Daily Challenge: Teams compete in a daily challenge where the winning team is immune from elimination and interrogates all players of the designated gender from the losing team
Eliminations (The Zone): The winning team individually vote for one interrogated player to compete in the elimination. The unselected interrogated players then participate in the Draw to determine the second player to compete in the elimination round. The winner remains in the game while the loser is eliminated from the main competition. However, unbeknownst to the remaining players, they still have a chance of re-entering the competition if their Ride or Die is still in

At the end of episode 14, the team phase concluded and contestants reunited with their Ride or Die. Each eliminated contestant during the team phase returned and also reunited with their Ride or Die if they were still in the competition. Each reunited pair who had one team member eliminated then had to compete in a two-part elimination round. The pair that lost the second elimination were permanently eliminated before the game reverted back to its original format
Twists
The Draw: To determine the second team for the elimination round, the three unselected interrogated teams must each pull a covered dagger out of a stone. The team that pulls the dagger marked "safe" is safe and selects one of the remaining two teams to save, sending the other to compete in the elimination round against the team chosen by the daily challenge winners. From episodes 10-14, players took part in the draw as individuals instead of teams; if only two players partake in the Draw, the player who pulls the safe dagger is saved while the remaining player automatically participates in the elimination round

Day Two - Teams race to a series of stations and complete each station's challenge before continuing. The order that teams finish the day's checkpoints determines the order they depart the following day
Station 1: Each team must throw ten bolas onto a structure from behind a line. After landing each second bola, they can assign a foul-tasting smoothie to another team. Once teams land all ten bolas, they must drink all the smoothies they currently have before proceeding to the next station
Station 2: Teams must transfer 16 tyres labelled with the names of eliminated contestants from the season, one at a time, down a one-kilometre (0.62 mi) track and arrange them on a pole in the order they were eliminated before proceeding to the next station
Station 3: Teams must use a slingshot to fire balls and hit two distant targets before proceeding to the next station. The first team to complete this may also sabotage a trailing team by assigning them an additional two targets to hit before they can continue - Eliminated: Horacio & Olivia (4th place)
Station 4: Teams swim through a swamp to collect bags of puzzle pieces at two platforms. After returning the puzzle pieces to their station, teams must then run down a path to view and memorize an answer key before recreating the key at their station using the puzzle pieces. Once complete, teams can proceed to the next station at a campsite

They must launch chalk bombs at the targets, attempting to hit as many as possible. The winning team from the previous day receive 25 chalk bombs to launch, second receives 20 bombs and third receives 15. The team that hit the most targets wins the ability to select the departure order for the next stage
Second stage: Teams must follow one of two paths in a dark corn maze to one of two campsites. Once all teams arrive at a campsite, a distant "Finale Zone" illuminates, which teams must race through the maze towards, departing in the order they arrived. The first team to arrive at the Zone are immune while the remaining two teams must participate in an Instant Elimination - Winners: Devin & Tori
Instant Elimination ("Balls In"): Played in male and female rounds. Each round, team members of the designated gender play both offense and defense. The offense player has one attempt to deposit a ball into a goal at the center of a ring while the defense player attempts to stop them by blocking them and knocking the ball out of bounds. Players then switch roles and repeat the process before the end of the round. The first team to score three balls wins while the losers are eliminated from the Final Challenge - Played by: Aneesa & Jordan vs. Bananas & Nany Eliminated: Aneesa & Jordan (3rd place)
